How the Hijri date is calculated

The Islamic (Hijri) calendar is a lunar calendar of 12 months. A month begins with the new crescent. The civil date changes at midnight; religiously, the new day begins at sunset. This page is configured for Saudi Arabia: Umm al-Qura, with civil dates taken in Asia/Riyadh. Authorities use different sighting and calculation rules, which is why the same Gregorian day can be one day apart in another country. Switch the country above to compare. For religious practice, confirm the date with your local mosque or authority.

What is the Hijri date today?

Hijri date today is 22 Jumada al-Ula 1448 AH for Saudi Arabia on Monday, 2 November 2026. This Hijri date today result comes from the country's month-start table (Umm al-Qura) with civil dates read in Asia/Riyadh, not from a fixed arithmetic offset.

The same Gregorian day can produce a different Hijri date today in another country. Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Indonesia and Turkey do not always announce the start of a month on the same day, so a result that is one day earlier or later is expected. Choose a country above to see that country's answer, or compare the rows in the table below.

Islamic date today and the Gregorian equivalent

The Islamic date today is the same idea as the Hijri date today. It is shown beside the Gregorian date and weekday so the conversion can be checked without opening another tool. The civil date changes at midnight; religiously, the new day begins at sunset.

For another day, open the converter and enter any Gregorian or Hijri date. For the wider year, use the 1448 AH calendar: its month table shows each month start, length and the main observances.

The Hijri date today: frequently asked questions

What is the Hijri date today?

The Hijri date today is shown at the top of this page as day, month and year, together with the Gregorian date and weekday for the Saudi Arabia setting. It comes from that country's month-start table (Umm al-Qura), with the civil date read in Asia/Riyadh, and it rolls over at midnight in that time zone. Nothing is added to the Gregorian date as a fixed offset: the page finds the first day of the current Hijri month and counts forward from it. A Hijri month has 29 or 30 days, and in this table 1448 AH has 355 days. If you live elsewhere, pick your country at the top of the page, because a month can start one day later where the crescent is sighted locally. When a month carries the label "Provisional (calculated)", its start comes from the calculated table and no official announcement has been recorded for it yet, so check with a trusted local authority before relying on it for worship.

Is the Islamic date today the same in every country?

Not always. In some months the date in Saudi Arabia runs one day ahead of Pakistan or other countries. Countries do not announce the start of a month on the same day: some follow a calculated calendar, others wait for a local sighting of the crescent, and the result can differ by one day. The country table on this page shows each country's date today next to its basis.

Does the Hijri date change at sunset or at midnight?

In Islamic law the day begins at sunset, so the night before 1 Ramadan already belongs to Ramadan. Civil calendars and websites, this one included, switch the date at local midnight in the selected country so that every Gregorian date maps to exactly one Hijri date. After sunset you may therefore still see the previous Hijri date until midnight.

How many days are in a Hijri month and a Hijri year?

A Hijri month has 29 or 30 days, and a Hijri year usually has 354 or 355 days, about 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year. That is why Ramadan and the two Eids arrive roughly 11 days earlier each Gregorian year. In the current Saudi Arabia table, 1448 AH has 355 days.

What does "Provisional (calculated)" mean?

It means the month start comes from calculation, the Umm al-Qura baseline plus the country default adjustment, and no official announcement has been recorded for it yet. "Official" means the month start is confirmed by an official source. A provisional month can move by one day once the announcement is made, which is why the status is shown beside each date.

Where does the Hijri year count start?

Hijri years are counted from the Hijra, the migration of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, and are marked AH. The year opens with Muharram and closes with Dhu al-Hijjah; Ramadan is the ninth month. Because the calendar is purely lunar, its months are not tied to the seasons.
